In the heart of St. Louis, Grand Center has evolved into a thriving cultural hub over the past two decades. This district, often considered the region's arts-and-theater hub, has seen a multitude of investments that have breathed new life into its artistic and architectural landscapes. Moreover, the district has made it a priority to weave activated green spaces into its approach. This post highlights some of the remarkable developments that are transforming Grand Center.
On Olive: A Vision of Urban Living

The "On Olive" development in St. Louis represents a cutting-edge urban living concept that has been making waves in the city. "On Olive" is a visionary project marked by innovative architecture and a strong community ethos, featuring a variety of contemporary homes and condos that are now on the market. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by acclaimed architects like Tatiana Bilbao, Productora, MOS, Macias Peredo, and Mitchell Wall & Associates, marries aesthetics and functionality, providing residents with an opportunity to immerse in the development's shared gardens and luxury amenity spaces. In essence, "On Olive" redefines urban living, emphasizing the intersection of design and community, making it an exciting addition to the St. Louis landscape.
The developers of On Olive, Olive West Properties, were resolute in their belief that original, modern homes designed by acclaimed architects would not only captivate art and architecture enthusiasts but also inspire the upcoming generation of designers, architects, and artists. They took inspiration from trailblazers like Henry Wright, who left an indelible mark on St. Louis with his historically significant neighborhoods. Wright's principles of livable, people-centric urban planning have endured for over a century, and the developers of On Olive aimed to build upon this legacy by creating a fresh model of a neighborhood that harmonizes nature and community, encouraging residents to connect with both.
Angad Arts Hotel
The Angad Arts Hotel, a veritable gem within Grand Center, has already made an indelible impact. Conceived as part of the district's revitalization efforts, this luxurious hotel transcends accommodation – it offers an immersive artistic experience. With its groundbreaking "Stay at Your Color" concept, guests can select rooms that resonate with their moods. The hotel also boasts exciting new dining spots that have become neighborhood favorites, drawing both visitors and locals who are seeking options after shows at the Fox Theatre.

Grand Center is home to the world-renowned St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and its historic Powell Hall has recently undergone an expansion and renovation. This development has ushered in world-class facilities for musicians and patrons, reaffirming the district's status as a focal point for musical excellence. A 65,000-square foot expansion will bring new spaces and programming including a visitor center and services as well as an education center and expanded backstage. The reimagined Powell Hall will open in 2025 to coincide with the building's centennial.

Open Space Activation in Grand Center - Urban HarvestSTL and Pocket Parks
The Grand Center Arts District has been somewhat of a role model in its efforts to create meaningful, activated green spaces that transcend traditional urban landscape development. The district's willingness to embrace innovation and art as well as its relationship with neighborhood partners, enable blah-to-brilliant spaces. With the addition of the Grandel Square Center for Urban Agriculture, this legacy is set to continue, fostering a future where community spaces and artistic expression are at the forefront of Grand Center.

This pioneering venture aspires to transform an urban space into a lush haven of growth, education, and artistic expression. As construction is set to commence in 2024, the community can anticipate a slew of exciting offerings. The space will include a demonstration farm, classroom, community gathering space, agricultural lending library, and a community supported agriculture program.
Other recent vacant space makeovers include the Academy Arts Plaza and Strauss Park.

Future Needs - Residential, Mixed-Uses
As we celebrate the remarkable developments in Grand Center, it's also crucial to recognize areas for potential improvement. While the district has made substantial strides in revitalizing its cultural and institutional landscapes, there remains a need for more private investment, including but not limited to affordable, market, and luxury rate housing. Proposals that capitalize on the neighborhood's central location and equal access to both the Central West End and Downtown should be prioritized.
Ultimately, Grand Center has the potential to become a thriving urban oasis that seamlessly blends art, architecture, nature, and community, offering a model for urban revitalization that inspires other cities.
