Drawing a contemporary addition to an 1898 red brick townhome in St. Louis.
The Proposal
This 1898 townhome in St. Louis, spanning 1900 square feet, is in need of a kitchen facelift and a backyard revamp. The owner is eager to enhance natural light flow and create a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.
Here's the plan: I am proposing a 250-square-foot addition, doubling the size of the kitchen and second-floor bedroom. The addition will match the existing brick facade, featuring expansive casement or awning windows that open up to the backyard.
For the outdoor space, we're envisioning an elevated deck wrapping around a cocktail pool. Whether it's a shipping container pool or a shallow above-ground pool nestled within a deck, we're keeping our options open to accommodate the owner's preferences. To complement the surroundings, I am proposing all-native plantings and incorporating stone boulders and rocks as pavers and steps leading to the deck. This approach will not only enhance the aesthetics but also promote some biodiversity and water mitigation in the backyard.
As an alternative, I've drawn a retractable shade structure over the garage-to-house path to shield residents from the elements when using the back entrance as a primary passage.

Existing Conditions
Take a look at the existing conditions below. While some neighboring buildings are well-maintained, others are awaiting some TLC, adding character to the neighborhood's mixed aesthetic.
